Domenyk Turski

"I am currently a final year Undergraduate student at the University of Bath finishing my Masters degree in Chemistry. I became a part of the Sartbaeva research group at the start of the 2016 academic year and I am currently researching surfaces and the morphology of various zeolites using both experimental and computational methods. My project is being done in collaboration with Prof. Steve Parker who supervises the computational side of my work. My interest in porous materials arose due to a module which was partially taught by Asel as well as a lab project I carried last summer on MOFs. Outside of Chemistry I enjoy playing the lesser-known sport of dodgeball and trying to improve my baking skills within a research group of keen bakers. Next year I will be staying at Bath to do a PhD and may have Asel as my co-supervisor while I research the possibility of carrying out water splitting using zeolites." - Written in 2016

Liam Wrigley

Liam joined the group in October 2016 for his masters project.

Amy White

I'm a final year masters student at the University of Bath studying chemistry. Last year I was on placement working in a materials science department. I am currently doing my masters project in the Sartbaeva group working on zeolites. My project is looking at how cations effect the formation of zeolite frameworks, specifically in the zeolite framework KFI. In the future I hope to get a job working with another materials science group. I also love animals and have two cats called Olly and Lexxy. -Written in 2016

Terrence Chung

I am a final year chemistry student doing my masters project as part of Asel's research group. My work is primarily focused on the release mechanism of ensilicated material. Using lysozyme as my model protein, i have been investigating the possibility of mechanically releasing ensilicated lysozyme with tris buffer. Finding a method to successfully release using just a buffer solution without the addition of other compounds would prove to be greatly beneficial as it would make the release process safer and easier to carry out.

Yun-Chu joined the group in 2012 as a P.h.D. student and worked on thermal stability of insulin using amorphous silica through the sol-gel chemistry.

Alex Silve

Lucy joined the group in October 2017 as a MChem project student working on vaccine stabilisation and ensilication.

Zoe Jones

Zoe joined the group in October 2017 as a MChem project student working on structural zeolite chemistry.

Mero-Lee Cornelius

I am a visiting research scholar from the University of the Western Cape, in Cape Town, South Africa where I am currently enrolled as a PhD student. I obtained both my MSc (Chemistry) degree (thesis titled: "The role of aluminium content in the control of the morphology of fly ash based hierarchical zeolite X.") and BSc (Honours) Chemistry degree (mini-thesis titled: "Conversion of oxygenates, produced from a high temperature Fischer-Tropsch process, to hydrocarbons over a zeolite catalyst.") from the University of the Western Cape. I obtained my undergraduate BSc (Chemical Biology) degree from Stellenbosch University in Western Cape, South Africa. My current research focuses on the valorisationof South African coal fly ash through the extraction of useful minerals and the subsequent utilisation of extracted minerals in the hydrothermal synthesis of zeolites. The research project particularly focuses on the synthesis of high-silica zeolites from a coal fly ash silicon precursor. The high thermal stability and solid acidity of high-silica zeolites have made them favourablematerials for application in catalysis and adsorption.Other research areas include geometric modelling of zeolite frameworks using GASP software.

Dr Antony Nearchou

I did my undergraduate Masters degree in Chemistry at Bath, which included a year placement at Intrinsiq Materials in Farnborough. I spent my Masters research project was investigating the role of cations in the synthesis of zeolite RHO under Asel's supervision. Upon graduating in 2014, I decided to return to Bath in 2015 to study this area further. My research focused on understanding the interplay between cations and organic structure directing agents to assemble specific zeolite frameworks. My other interests include nanoporous materials, functional materials and applications in catalysis, adsorption and separation.

Dr Abdulsalami Kovo

Dr Kovo Abdulsalami Sanni is an Associate Professor and a COREN registered Engineer in the Department of Chemical Engineering, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Nigeria. He visited the Department of Chemistry, University of Bath, United Kingdom as a Commonwealth Rutherford Fellow and worked on the Development of hierarchical Zeolites in Dr Sertbarva’s Laboratory.

Aswin Doekhie

Aswin wrote in 2018: I am a PhD student with the Sartbeava group. I received my BSc from the Hanze University of Applied Sciences in 2011, MSc from Cardiff Metropolitan University in 2014 and have worked in industry between studies. My experience is related to virology and vaccine development during internships and industrial jobs in the Netherlands and UK. I am working on the ensilication of vaccines project since September 2015 where I combine my industrial experience with chemical methods and characterisation of materials to help improve global health.

Ollie Cornish

Ollie joined the group in October 2018 reserching his masters project on using zeolites for the removal of medicinal drug waste from water. He graduated in 2019

Hayden Thompson

Hayden Graduated in 2019. I'm a 4th year Masters student working towards my MChem as a part of the Sartbaeva research group. I recently spent the better part of a year researching in Asia where I spent 9 months at City University of Hong Kong working on a computational physical project before interning at Academia Sinica (IAMS) in Taipei, Taiwan for 2 months. There I worked on a more biological project via computation methods (Published papers coming soon!), with the Sartbeava group I will be working on exploring crystal growth by computationally modelling surfaces of zeolites.

Lucy Weaver

Lucy Graduated in 2019. I am in the final year of my undergraduate Chemistry degree and I have recently joined the Sartbaeva group as part of my Masters research project. Last year I completed my industrial placement year at GSK based in Ware, Hertfordshire. At GSK, I worked within the Bioanalysis department where I was responsible for the analysis of drugs and their metabolites in biological media. Within the Sartbaeva group, I will be researching the freeze-thaw stability of proteins as part of the ensilication project.

Matt Wilkinson

Matt joined the group in October 2018 as a masters student working on the ensilication project. He graduated in 2019.

Patrick joined the group in the summer 2018 working on Zeolite materials as an extended summer student.

Calum Hand

Calum joined the group in June 2019 as a PhD student working on ensilication research as part of the CSCT first year projects. Calum graduated with a BSc in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of St Andrews in 2016 and a Masters of Research in Green Chemistry from Imperial College London in 2017. As part of his Master’s thesis, Calum successfully synthesised novel monomers for organic photovoltaics and investigated a range of compounds using computational methods. After graduating, Calum worked for RIMES – a leading financial data management firm – where he was rapidly promoted from a front line analyst to the account team handling the firm’s largest client.
