Are you interested in doing a Doctorate? I'm usually looking for bright and enthusiastic early-career researchers who want to spend a few years doing cutting-edge research in a dynamic and outgoing environment in order to gain a PhD. The Centre for Photonics and Photonic Materials is a great place to develop your career.
We offer a dynamic and outward-looking environment, where you would work as a part of a team. During your PhD you should plan to become a world expert in your chosen topic, although that speciality might be very narrow! You would have numerous opportunities to set your own research directions and targets, to give talk and mini-seminars, and to interact with other researchers informally and more formally. You would attend research meetings at least weekly, and should expect to spend a significant amount of time reading papers published by other people. We would expect that PhD students would publish journal papers describing their research, and students that I supervise should expect to be attending major international conferences during the course of their PhD. Eventually, you will need to write, submit and defend a thesis describing your research.
All PhD students require the means to support their studies. They need to be able to pay their living expenses, travel expenses to Bath, and university registration fees. For home/eu students, studentships covering these costs are sometimes available - please get in touch. Many other governments will sponsor their students to come to Bath for a Ph.D., so please look into your options if you are thinking of getting in touch.
