Windows 10 + Android Nexus 4
My Android phone (Nexus 4) wasn't being recognised by Windows 10. Here is what I did to fix it. Probably not all the steps are necessary, but they worked!

On the phone, go to Settings > Storage > 3 dots in top right corner > USB computer connection > Camera (PTP).

On the PC, go to Start > Device manager, and "Nexus 4" should appear under "Portable devices". Right-click it, and click "Update driver software", then "Browse my computer for driver software" and "Let me pick from a list". Deselect "Show compatible hardware", find "LG Electronics, Ltd" on the left-hand box, and then "LGE Android Net MTP Device" in the right-hand box. Click next, and OK, and close.

On the phone, again go to Settings > Storage > 3 dots in top right corner > USB computer connection, but this time choose "Media device (MTP)".

It now works!

Dell XPS touchpad problems with Windows 10
I got a new Dell XPS 13 laptop last week. It's really nice, but the touchpad was dodgy. I've never had problems with touchpads before; they've always been reliable. This one is very fancy, but when I made small movements it didn't respond properly. Especially in the vertical direction, if I moved my finger a small amount nothing happened at first, and then it would make a tiny jump once I got a certain distance.

Other people seem to have had similar problems, and other problems with e.g. scrolling.

This post seems to have fixed that issue for me: https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/3nbjbp/yes_a_solutionactual_working_fix_xps_laptops/
(see one of the comments at the bottom for more detailed info).

Now the scrolling seems to be unreliable though. Swings and roundabouts.

It looks like it's a Windows 10 problem, and not really Dell's fault.

When I was your age
When I was your age I had toured with Blondie
When I was your age I had practised polyamory
When I was your age I had escaped McCarthyism
When I was your age I had escaped Nazi Berlin

The Luminaries
I've just finished reading the Luminaries, a book by Eleanor Catton which won the Booker prize in 2013 (I got the book for Christmas in 2013, but it's 828 pages long so it took a while to get around to reading it).

The first half was ok. The book never uses one word where 100 will do, but the story was intriguing enough to pique my interest. The second half was just disappointing. This review sums things up pretty well.

Catton never shows, she tells, wagging on in the most officious way. She has a particularly dismaying habit of telling us what the characteristics of every personage are, before then making them conform to them, a sure-fire way of killing any curiosity.

Some colourful rectangles
There is some maths behind this, honest.

A new simulation
One of these processes - red or blue - is (more or less) the Eden model. Can you tell which one it is?
