Flower power
I heard this conversation last weekend:

F1: "Why didn't you __________ with us yesterday?"
F2: (Silence)
F3: "Well, he's got to be more careful now..."
F1: "Why?"
F3: "Because..." (looks at F2's girlfriend)
F1: "That's stupid. You should just be yourself."

It reminded me of the line I quoted a week ago, from Wilco's "Candy Floss":

"I'm the boy with the poetry powers
I'm the boy she helps like flowers"

That's one of my favourite Jeff Tweedy lines. The juxtaposition of two seemingly contradictory parts of being in a relationship: being yourself, and changing. Are they really antithetical? This person I call me is just a hotchpotch of influences anyway... my family, my friends, teachers, books, TV... being myself isn't just about staying the same, it's also about learning to change for the better.
