What is Tai Chi?

Introduction
T'ai Chi Ch'uan is often translated as 'The Supreme Ultimate'.
There are various styles of T'ai Chi Ch'uan, the most popular being Yang, Chen, Lee, Wu and Sun, but there are many other variations. We learn the Lee family style.

The Lee style form consists of a long sequence of flowing movements which are performed at a slow and rhythmic pace with deep co-ordinated breathing and full concentration. These movements contain the essence of good health and longevity and help the practicioner develop strong internal energy.

The Lee style is reputed to have been developed by Lee Ho Hsieh around 1,000 BC, the original T'ai Chi Ch'uan form consisted of just eight movements. As it is practised today, the form consist of 140 movements arranged in 42 sets, and still contains the original eight movements.

Benefits of T'ai Chi Ch'uan
The benefits of regular practice of T'ai Chi Ch'uan are many. Balance and coordination are improved physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Relaxation and concentration also improve. The gentleness of the exercise ensures that the practioner does not suffer any strains or other muscular injuries. Physical stamina, flexibility and suppleness are increased.

T'ai Chi Ch'uan is a suitable exercise for everybody, whatever their age or state of health. It is practised throughout the world by people of all cultures, religions, lifestyles and beliefs. A moving meditation, T'ai Chi soothes and calms the nervous system, promoting a sense of inner peace and tranquility.

In addition to the T'ai Chi Ch'uan form aspects of the art of include:
T'ai Chi Fei Shou (T'ai Chi Flying Hands)
I Fu Shou (Sticky Hands)
Lun Shou (Whirling Hands)
Lun Pei (Whirling Arms)
Chi Kung (Internal Energy Development)
Li Kung (External Energy Development)

The art also includes weapons forms using the stick, sword, silk and fan.
