At the Uni
I joined the University of Bath in 2018 but at the end of 2022, I left the Department of Chemistry and joined Campus Infrastructure as an assistant locksmith. I love the job and it presents me daily challenges which suits me well. The job is often complicated with lots of variables and fault-finding to get my head around, but I have a great mentor who is friendly and patient.
The job itself is massively diverse. An average day can be gaining entry, making lock repairs, cutting keys and creating new locks, suites and other entry methods like the magnetic locks and swipe cards.
It's a profession which will never be fully learnt and with each step needing precision and experience, every day is a challenge. I don't think I'll ever be bored - which is how I like it.
So, my aim? There are a lot of new names to learn, skills to discover and learn, and ultimately to really learn the trade and get to be 'the man who can' but for locks!
But like many other staff on campus, there are other interests I enjoy. I'm a First Aider and Mental Health First Aider, Wellbeing Champion, Fire Warden and founder member of the Men's Network. That takes some of my time but it's really worth it. We've presented some very impressive events over the years.
And I guess I have to mention my incredible achievement of the Staff Recognition Award. I won 'Best Supporting Colleagues' in 2019 and again in 2024. I am very humbled and somewhat overwhelmed by this.Receiving my Recognition Award from the Vice-Chancellor, 2024 (and 2019)
