Introduction

The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was a country that existed in southeastern Europe between 1945 and 1991. We will refer to this country as Yugoslavia.

Map of Yugoslavia

Yugoslavia was made up of six nations, or regions: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia (see the map on the next page).

The people of Yugoslavia came from different ethnic and religious groups.

Most Catholics lived in Croatia and Slovenia, most Muslims lived in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and most Serbian Orthodox Christians lived in Serbia.

However, there were mixtures of these groups throughout the country.
