Some failures of self-similarity in the porous-medium equation

There are numerous instances in which self-similar solutions play an essential role in the asymptotic behaviour of the widely studied porous-medium equation. Some examples (both one- and higher-dimensional) in which this is not straightforwardly the case will be treated by the techniques of formal asymptotics.
