On the nonlinear stability of shear flows and vortices
I will discuss some recent work (in collaboration with Hao Jia) on the global asymptotic stability of shear flows and vortices among solutions of the 2D Euler equations. More precisely, we prove (1) global asymptotic stability in a finite channel of general smooth monotonic shear flows that satisfy a suitable spectral condition, and (2) global asymptotic stability of point vortices in the plane.
