Facial motion can be recorded using motion capture equipment. Markers are attached to the face and their motion in three dimensions is recorded using special cameras. I have been involved in a series of investigations with Dr. Carroll-Ann Trotman of Tufts University Dental School, looking at the facial motion of various types of patients and this differs from the rest of population. In particular, we have been interested in studying motion in subjects with cleft lip and/or palate and how surgery changes facial motion. I am also interested in body motion.
