Labour Markets and Labour Market Processes
Theoretical work on the nature of labour markets (Jones 1996c; Jones 1998) has been complemented by studies of recruitment, training and redundancies described below.
Investigations of the comparability of European vocational qualifications and skills were undertaken for the EU Centre for the Development of Vocational Education, 1988-1991.
Comparative differences in sectoral recruitment, utilisation and career development of young graduate engineers in Britain and Germany were studied during 1992-93 (Jones, Scott, Bolton and Bramley 1993).
Work Occupational & Industrial Change: British & Comparative Aspects
Previous research has investigated new patterns of work organisation related to technological change and flexible working methods (Rose & Jones 1985; Jones 1989. Comparative and socio-political aspects of these changes have been researched in Britain, Italy, USA and Japan (Jones 1997).
Specific features of the above phenomena in small firms have also been investigated in various projects, in Britain and Italy (Jones 1997; Scott, Jones, Bolton and Bramley 1997).
Larger questions about national specificities
in work organisation and employment structures, raised by the CEDEFOP studies,
were examined through an international - Work, Employment & Society
- conference organised with Peter Cressey at Bath (Cressey and Jones 1996).
Political Cultures and Socio-Economic Change
The development and structures of small industrial firms, and the spread of new technology and work practices, has also been studied in relation to changing political cultures (Jones & Saren 1990; Jones 1997).
A more specifc examination of the role of political values was undertaken in a survey of members and ex-members of the British Labour Party to identify the impact of post-socialist political cultures left-wing political activism (Jones & Saren 1990, Jones 1996a, 1996b)
Business Strategies, Redundancies and Social Inequalities
With Peter Nisbet ressearch is being conducted into the relationships between labour force reduction schemes, the implementation of collective redundancies and the role of other labour market agencies in subsequent employment prospects (Nisbet and Jones 1998).
