Carboniferous limestone was formed in a continental shelf marine environment. It
contains fossils of many creatures that lived on the sea floor, e.g. corals and
brachiopods. Carboniferous limestone can be seen clearly at Cheddar Gorge in the
Mendips, where it is possible to walk through caves formed in the limestone.
