Single molecule spectroscopy

Single molecule spectroscopy is one of the most powerful techniques to study single entities in the absence of inhomogeneous broadening. We have studied single conjugated polymer chains demonstrating how those spaghetti like macromolecules can assume an all straight conformation with unique implications for the electronic structure (1). These experiments were performed in a recent “spaghetti western” visiting period at the University of Utah and using a single molecule fluorescence excitation setup. The technique can be also used to study semiconductor quantum dots with complex shapes such as tetrapods unravelling the nature of polarized light emission in these symmetric structures (2) or exciton localization (3).

At university of Bath we aim to study the dynamics of electronic processes such are energy and charge transfer using time resolved single molecule spectroscopy.
