sigma-sw Regional Hub Meeting
Undergraduate Projects in Mathematics
06 April 2011
University of the West of England, Bristol
Many degree programmes in Mathematics and Statistics include a final year project or dissertation, either as part of the core or as an option. A project module provides excellent teaching and learning opportunities both for staff and for students, but it also presents several challenges, especially given the current UK higher education context. This meeting will provide a forum in which a variety of key issues related to the running of project modules may be discussed. These issues include - but are not restricted to - the following: dealing with increasing student numbers and decreasing staff resources; different models for running project modules; suitable project topics; online assessment tools; the role of the internet; employability; developing key skills; preparing students for a project module; how can diverse mathematical or statistical project topics be assessed fairly and equitably?; the role of group work.
