InDES: Hevia

Picture of DES chemistry at Bern

Understanding the role of safe, inexpensive and biodegradable deep eutectic solvents (DES) in the synthesis of fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals and materials will enable the design of efficient and greener manufacturing routes. The Hevia group has recently challenged conventional dogma, showing that DES enable efficient use of organolithium and Grignard reagents under air at room temperature, rather than the low temperatures, strict inert atmospheres and dry O2-free toxic organic solvents usually required. In this project we are exploring the mechanisms that underpin this astonishing behaviour and transferring our reactions to flow to develop potential routes to industrial use.
