Toby Whitley

Full Name:

Dr Toby Whitley

I came to Bath from the Centre for Communications Research at Bristol University where I worked as one of the senior research fellows on the OSIRIS project (part of 3CR).  I’ve been appointed at Bath as a lecturer working for Dr Duncan Allsopp with funding from his recently awarded Leverhulme research fellowship.

Research interests:

My research interests are focused on broadband wireless communications systems (3 & 4G) including WiFi and WiMAX.  Areas of research include: -

·         Providing QoS in wireless systems allowing them to support the increasing demands of carried traffic and multimedia applications.

·         Channel adaptation techniques that use MIMO and other intelligent antenna technologies to make full use of the radio channel.

·         Medium Access Control (MAC) techniques and design using modern control methods to provide greater intelligence and awareness in radio systems.

Other interests:

Teacher’s Engineering and Science Education Forum:

A free event for teachers that aims to bring teachers and lecturers together with engineering employers, representatives of professional institutions and universities, in order to promote links and the sharing of ideas and information.  The day will also provide delegates with information, support and resources to enhance the teaching and promotion of science and engineering.

Sporting interests:

I am a keen cyclist and triathlete and an active member of Bristol and District Triathletes, BADTri.  I also enjoy climbing and mountaineering and recently summated Storen Norway’s third highest mountain in winter conditions, this ties in a little with my other hobby of photography.  Some of my climbing pictures can be seen here.
