Not quite sure what budget is like and I'm pretty sure I know what the answer to this will be, but is there any chance of getting a digital clock for studio one at somepoint in the future?

Depends on simons skills - in the engineering store there is a resonable selection of odds and sods from the capital FM studio clock system of old. Although the last time we (that means simon btw - i just found the thing) looked I think we were missing several key components and some important knowledge. To be honest not a lot would be gained - as it would drift (unless it was radio controlled as the current clock is) more than the existing clock. I don't know how much a radio controlled digital clock would cost - but budgets are pretty tight and engineering wise you just have to look around a bit for higher priorities... (-) Computers (-) Cooling (perhaps you wouldn't spot it but a lot of stuff gets pretty hot in the engineering zone! (-) I'm sure there is other stuff I have forgotten as well! M*

Note to board members - there is a perfectly good, if not slightly lonely engineering board to bring up stuff like this Dave! Yeah, I'd like to get some digis going, at some point, though the ones we have look like a lost cause, despite their considerable beauty. I bet a good quartz clock will hold decent enough time with a bit of checking - there are no moving parts to confuse things.

I'm a bit concerned as to why we need a digital clock. Can people not tell the time? If you like I would be happy to have a telling the time workshop. Also, not that I really know anything about the desk, but when your doing your timings for the news, isn't it easier to see the second hand so you can see how much time you have left in spacial terms rather than just seeing a number.

Aaaah - but you haven't seen the clock I found last year then!

Not for us maths people!!! Knowing the news starts at 11 seconds to the easier is a heck of a lot easier especially when you have goals going in left right and centre.

I think it's meant to be some kind of boy thing - they prefer numbers.....if we get a digital clock can we still keep the old one though, I much prefer hands to numbers.

If its anything like the capital ones then it will have both forms of the clock on it

Yeah, it would be amazing to get these ones running - they have a digi bit in the middle, and a digi second counter, as well as a ring of lights that counts the seconds, so if you're a conventional person like Jenny, you can do it spacially, and if you're the other sort, you have the number 49 to look out for. And of course, then we can make sure any photos of the studio take place at exactly 14:49, and it'll show up nicely! We'd have to keep the current clock whatever happens, unless we can replace it with radio control, otherwise we have no point of reference.

Yes, perhaps you are the only person here to start the news 11 minutes early. Best I've done is a minute late. Do the maths sir!

Arse - it was a special er... show.... with an eleven minute pre-produced segment celebrating 5 years of IRN providing URBs news .... er...... with like... lots of the big ..... er ..... stories of the five years -iraq war - september 11th - queen mother - tsunami - that kind of thing. .... I think that's cleared that up. (yeh, it's 11 seconds up to the news kids - not 11 minutes - good thing I got it right when I made the news bed)

Aargh! Enough of the bloody clock already! Just admit you're wrong mark! Best time for bringing in the news is 1 minute late :: then you tend to hit it in the middle of some obscure quote, like the one I found once that simply said "Nice thighs". HA. Beat that.

Just going back to your clock thing. Wouldnt a cheap and simple way to solve the problem be to set up the internet time syncronisation so that the clocks on radio cart showed the exact time with the seconds too. And failing that as we all know that microsift products dont work how they should alot of the time download a third party syncronisation tool (of which there are many). Then all those wanting a digital clock have 2 one on each of the radio cart screens.

radio cart's time reporting isn't very good (trust me) watch the clock carefully every now and again it skips a second - also it can actually lag from the system clock after it's been running a wile by a few seconds so even using nstp wouldn't get you that far. Although I agree, red and blue (and all the other pcs to be honest should really be) i think using the radio clock to hit news will always be far far more accurate.
