Film based phobias

Postby Pureferret » Sat Apr 09, 2011 1:26 pm

So reccently after talking to people at screenigns I've noticed some people just plain avoid some films cos it frightens them. Things like The Mummy and Jurassic park.

Anyone else have any film phobias?

Pretty much any kind of horror film, and anything where evil clowns (or clowns in general, tbh) are a feature.

I also avoid anything starring Paris Hilton, but that's altogether different.

Still can't work up the courage to watch the original Japanese version of The Ring. Generally I'm good with and very much enjoy horror, but I can't work up the guts to watch that one.

Also INLAND EMPIRE is very daunting to me. I have a pretty good idea what it's like (I've seen some of the footage that's used in it, and am familiar with the director who has a habit of making stuff that really gets under my skin), and last time I tried to watch it I got about a minute in listening to the strange soundscape at the beginning as was like "No, this is a bad idea..." and stopped. It's silly really because I'm fairly sure I'd love it (and love being massively creeped out by it), but I just need to work up the courage to watch it in the first place...

Anything that shows excruciating pain, e.g. bones visibly breaking, operations etc.

For example, I think Black Hawk Down is a pretty good film (but as always, the book is better!) however the scene where they have to operate on the solider while in the town... do not like. I'm fine reading about it, but I hate watching it.

When I was younger I remember being scared by Titanic for some reason...

You'll mainly find me at Anime, but also at some of the Classic and Contemporary screenings. I'm usually in the student centre before screenings too.

I can't watch anything to do with peoples nails being broken, snapped etc. Scenes like the torture in the first season of lost still take some effort to watch. It all started off when I read Firestarter.

Used to avoid the Mummy coz it freaked the hell out of me when I first watched it...but I'm okay now!

I don't watch any horror movies at all...I just don't do gore or anything and even if they aren't gory I over-analyse everything and end up freaking myself out anyway!

I can only remember one film I actually had to look away from, and that was Mousehunt. One scene had one of the main characters set up for such an embarassing fall that I actually had to leave the cinema screen for a few minutes.

Then again, I don't watch much horror so perhaps there are more phobias lurking...

Horror just full stop and I'd be unwilling to see any silent movies.

Oh I also avoid American Pie and films like that... *shiver* why are they allowed to make things that crap... WHY!?

especially anything to do with zombies (seen both Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland - both terrified me to near tears)
and stuff that make you jump
or with parasites (why I'm sure Alien would be a bad idea)

that and I really struggle with musicals.... xD
