Does anyone here play anything musical?

Can you play anything Sci-Fi/Fantasyish on there?

I play the harp, your discovery of this being what I'm guessing prompted the creation of this thread? Can't play any fantasy/scifiish stuff yet, though if I found a piece that interested me I'd certainly give it a go...

That is awesome, Will! Have you got a little one with you at uni, then?

I''m a clarinetist primarily, but also dabble a bit in piano/keyboard and play a little bass, electric and acoustic guitar. Not brilliant at any of them though. I also play descant and treble recorder, but that's a bit lame, really...

My favourite things I used to play were the movie theme medleys in my college's band - we did bit of everything, including a lot of sci-fi and fantasy, in there. I used to have a great book of Disney stuff you could play along to a CD, too - 'Zero to Hero' from Hercules was great fun.

I'm amazed you have room in your room for all the quiz stuff then. :P

That is pretty amazing - would love to see you play it sometime!

It's a pretty decentish sized room. The harp can fit in without too much issue.

You're more than welcome to come see me play it whenever you want :D

Not a whole lot at the moment. I've been without a teacher for a few months as the one in Bath isn't able to start teaching me until January... I've taught myself a few folk pieces and am also slowly learning Pachelbel's Canon, though am aware it's probably a tad too advanced for me. There are also the pieces my old teacher taught me, most of which I've forgotten though I imagine I could pick them up again very quickly...

That's a shame will. I'd love to learn self but I haven't the ear, nor the patience. I'd also love to learn the Mandolin and the Accordian.....

I play the piano, and used to play the accordion (but stopped, cause it just didn't suit me). The only sci-fi/fantasy-related music I've ever played was some Final Fantasy music some years ago.

Didn't suit your style or was too much work?

I'd personally love to learn to play one, though there would be the risk of me carrying it around with me everywhere and bursting into song!

When I was younger, I used to play the Guitar and Piano. However, not having much of an interest in music back then I only played things from a book, which wasn't that interesting. Now that i've got an interest in music, i'd like to try learning again if only to try and play some of my favourite songs.

You'll mainly find me at Anime, but also at some of the Classic and Contemporary screenings. I'm usually in the student centre before screenings too.

None of the two, actually. It just wasn't comfortable? I think because I started with the piano first, I was used to not having to carry my instrument when playing. And I realized after learning for a few years that I didn't even like the sound of the instrument that much (as opposed to, say, the cello or the viola).

I've been told by a friend the sax is easy to learn and I should learn it....Is this true or all lies?

Depends what instruments you've played before. It's notoriously easy for a clarinetist to pick up, and if you've got some experience on another reed (or even, at a push, wind) instrument I should think you could have a fair go...

Well the fingerings are similar to other woodwind instruments, so it was easy to pick the notes up. Reed took a bit of getting used to, as did the bulk of the instrument! But as Twitchy said, it would depend on what other instruments you have experience with as to how easy it would be for you.

I'd say it was kinda easy to PLAY, but playing it and sounding good is another story!

The most difficult thing with larger reed instruments is the reed tends to be thicker, so you have to completely change the way you tense your lips. I had a bass clarinet for a brief period, and it was so hard to adjust my playing so I didn't just squeak!
