Anime Taster (8 Oct 2010)

So those who attended this screening will have an idea of anime, and maybe what we have to offer.

So what did you think? Was it what you expected? Any favourites?

For those that don't know there was supposed to be a leaflet explaining the Comic Drawing, however they never left my bag. The main thing was that there was an option of two one-day events as well. And I know I will be trying to go.

FAIL. :P

What was the eventual line-up for the evening?

There's info for the 10 week comic book drawing course in an email all soc members should have received. For those who haven't paid up yet (or deleted the email) just google "bath ICIA" and you should be able to find all the stuff they offer - this comes under visual arts. There are two one-off courses and I believe the first is towards the end of this month. The 10 week course starts on Monday.

I really enjoyed the anime taster evening. I've watched a bit of anime here and there (about 7 series plus loads of Miyazaki films and a couple other things) but I really don't know much at all so it was nice to try some stuff out.

My favourite one was definitely Lucky Star which I absolutely loved! I was smiling pretty much the entire time. So fun and delightfully unfocused and crazy :D

The other stuff. I really liked Trigun which was great fun, Death Note I really enjoyed though I've read the manga series and there's a bit of me that feels the anime might not be quite as addictive (plus I liked the second half of the manga whereas everyone always moans about the second half of the anime), Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha seems like it would be awesome once it gets rolling and I really enjoyed the first episode. Code Geass I liked but didn't get into as much as I was hoping to though that's probably because it was just the first episode. Similarly Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni I liked but wasn't over the moon about though considering how much everyone there was praising it I'm hoping that's just another case of first episode syndrome. I'm not sure how much I liked She The Ultimate Weapon but it's definitely sweet and seems like it could be fascinating.

Thank you! :D

Whooo, feedback time!

I really liked the taster! Of the series that I haven't watched before, Trigun stood out to me as a series I would probably enjoy a lot. Higurashi also caught my eye (though I don't usually go for thriller/murder stuff; I'm kinda scared of watching it cause I know things will go very, very wrong very soon). Plus, the little discussion we had during the break pretty much convinced me to check out Angel Beats (I'm hoping for you guys that it's not just an overdose of fanservice!!! :D ). I'll try out a few more episodes of DN, too, but the first one definitely did not convince me.

Also, Lucky Star on big screen = love.

Thanks for all of your feedback, it's really appreciated :)

It was great talking to all of you during the break and afterwards and finding out more about what you've watched and trading recommendations.

My personal favourite was Higurashi (although as a series, i'd rank Lucky Star higher) due to the feeling of suspense of mystery. I hadn't seen Trigun before, it's somewhat crazy but funny at the same time. She the ultimate weapon was also one I hadn't seen but I was pleasantly surprised by - it's quite an unusual take on relationships.

It's good to see that people did like Lucky Star, my fear was that the randomness, number of references and such would put people off, but it seems this wasn't the case - success!

I look forward to seeing all of you again at next week's screening - remember that we're now back in our usual room of 8W 1.1 for the rest of the semester!

Craig: The eventual lineup for the evening was as published but swapping Planetes for Code Geass.

Quick edit:

I think you might be slightly confused, Angel Beats is a fantastic series and has no fanservice, it's High School of the Dead which has the fanservice overdose.
Former SciFi IT Officer now taking great pleasure in telling the current committee that they're doing it all wrong and that they should get off my lawn.
You'll mainly find me at Anime, but also at some of the Classic and Contemporary screenings. I'm usually in the student centre before screenings too.

And remember guys, anything we haven't shown in the previous two academic years (which I believes excludes some stuff from the taster, but not all) is fair game for being suggested and shown next semester. Nominations will start soon, I believe...
