CONTEMPORARY SUGGESTIONS!

What did you think of our more recent blockbusters?

CONTEMPORARY SUGGESTIONS!

Postby Twitchy » Mon Oct 26, 2009 8:35 pm

At some time in November/December we'll have our AGM. For sci-fi, this largely consists of everyone who turns up voting on what films they want to see next semester. Suggestions will be taken here on this topic, via email, or in person at any time before the AGM.

The guidelines are:
1) The film has to be sci-fi or fantasy related, albeit very tenuously sometimes.
2) The film can't have been shown at sci-fi in the last 3 academic years (i.e. the length of most degree courses). If in doubt, take a look at our screenings archive. Anything from 2006/2007 or before is ok!
http://people.bath.ac.uk/su8scifi/index ... ge=archive
3) As a general rule, contemporary films are post-1999, but anything suggested that's in the wrong category will be reclassified before we take a vote.
4) Any really unsuitable suggestions won't be put before a vote - argue your case if you think your suggestion might be borderline acceptable!

In the past we've had some short films suggested, or ran several episodes of TV programmes. If this is the sort of stuff you want to see - suggest it! If the society members like it, it'll probably get shown.

Would Sweeney Todd come under 'very tenuous fantasy'? I mean, it's not like he was a real person... And the film is very good indeed with very good people in it...

Bit of a random one here, but the TV series Jekyll was excellent and fits the scifi part. Only trouble being it's 6 hour-long episodes, which is a bit of a bummer to show.

Could do some episodes of Torchwood perhaps?

Er... Blackadder Back and Forth? S'got time travel... Only half an hour or so though.

Ooh, yes, Jekyll was very good. A long slog though, so we'd need to do it on a Saturday or show it over two weeks...which I doubt many would be too keen on.

I'd just like to jot down, before I forget:

Moon
Let The Right One In
District 9

I don't see any particular barrier to running more Saturday showings, provided at least somebody from the committee is willing to sit through it. They are fairly trivial to organise on my end.

I suggest:
Drag Me To Hell (Good horror by Sam Raimi)
Watchmen (because why isn't this on the screening list this semester?)
"Hey Sam, if it's always getting later and later, then how come it's early sometimes?"

It was, originally! We just had so much on our contemporary 'shortlist', with a LOT of other stuff from earlier this year, and figured one of the members would probably suggest it during semester 2.

Most definitely! Apparently District 9 is the best movie EVAR. Also yes, Watchmen, because there might well be something wrong with the society if we don't show that.

And on the subject of Helloboy/Guillermo del Toro, Pan's Labyrinth.

Again, that could scrape in, but it's well worth watching any number of times.

PotC is a good idea, but would we show just one (assumedly the first one) or do another marathon? We're getting to have quite a lot of those...perhaps any suggestions that we think are good but don't make the cut could be noted down to help next year's committee think of things? Advent Children would fill the second semester's Wolverine slot. :P

The problem with showing V for Vendetta is that the Film soc are showing it next week... might reduce the number who would want to see it again.
Pan's Labyrinth was also shown by the Film soc recently.

I'd still turn up to both, but others may not because of the 'other' society.

I would suggest The Time Travelers Wife - but I have no idea when the DVD is being released. It is *vaguely* fantasy-ish because of the time-travel.

Definitely agree on Time Traveler's Wife. I adore the book, but never managed to make it to the film. It has time travel, therefore it's definitely acceptable.

I'm not sure how many members the two societies have in common - anybody who's in both have any idea about this? If enough people want to see (and therefore vote for) V For Vendetta and Pan's labyrinth though, they'll get shown.

Haven't seen either Pan's Labyrinth or The Time Traveller's Wife, definitely wanted to see The Time Traveller's Wife, so that's got my vote, but can't remember if I wanted to see Pan's Labyrinth, though I think I did.

Pan's Labyrinth is good, but only if you then wander around afterwards with your hands over your eyes a la Pale Man. Which everyone does, even if they don't admit it...

A suggestion, but only if the DVD comes out in time, as the films just been released:
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

For real.

Also, yay for Pale Man! Otherwise known as the inverted Zoidberg (try it! :P). Apparently the Time Traveller's Wife is confused and rather lost as a film - haven't seen it myself, it's just what I remember from reviews. It might be worth someone who's (or those who've) read the book checking to make sure they're not going to want to throw things at the screen. Or maybe they'd want it shown to throw things at the screen...

A few more (possibly slightly girly, for the most part) ideas:

The Last Mimzy
The Emperor's New Groove
Corpse Bride
Nanny McPhee
Penelope
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Inkheart

Plus from last semester's shortlist:
Solaris

I love The Emperor's New Groove! ^^ That and Penelope might be too...mainstream for us? We did show Twilight though I suppose. But once you've shown one Disney film...

Solaris sounds good, and Corpse Bride is the usual Burton awesomeness.

Mainstream in what sense? 'Cause we've showed enough really popular films lately...

I also didn't think that many people went to see Penelope when it was in cinemas...which is a shame.
