Kingsley, are you enlisting yourself with the task of checking/getting all the anime suggestions together? I've got a partial list, but haven't updated it...

We've certainly got a lot now...and now I'm sad we won't be able to show more than three or four series...

I will check them all and compile a list before the AGM night. I've got to agree though, it's a shame - so many good suggestions! (next year's committee: take note of what's here)

That's a nice list of underrated animes, but please list any you'd like to see in this thread (as others have) otherwise I won't count them.

I didn't list any specifically as I haven't seen any of them, and I don't want to nominate something which I can't say is great. I just threw it out there to see if anyone had watched them and so could vouch for them. As it turns out some have been seen.

You don't have to have seen an anime in order to nominate it, if it sounds good please go ahead and nominate. Some of my own personal nominations are ones that I have heard good things about and sound interesting, but not seen myself.

from the list: the ones' i've seen(or seen part of)

Excel Saga is extremely silly. It's a good comedy, but whatever you do not try to make sense of it.
Elfen Lied* - highschool comedy featuring Nana and her pixie friend Lucy who just can't tell the truth.
Black Lagoon - good
Slayers - crazy adventures with Lina Inverse: Mage, Bandit Slayer, and Enemy of All Who Live
Crest of the Stars - a bit of a slow plot, but a good watch. Sci-fi

*this description may be slightly misleading

and some more random suggestions:

Gokudo - the anti-hero who discovers a genie who offers to grant him 3 wishes. things sort of get random from there
Beck - engrish!!! and music

Tsundere Time:

Zero no Tsukaima - a violent pettanko who's magic usually backfires accidentally summons an ordinary highschool boy to her magical world. Comedy Ensues.
Shakugan no Shana - a hot Magical Girl with katana, and seemingly ordinary highschool student...
Fate/Stay Night - looks good, never actually seen it

tropes will be coming later. need sleep for now.

Others:

K-ON - musical moe
Canaan - looks interesting

According to wikipedia, they're going to release the dvds starting in spring 2011... which doesn't rule it out as a possibility, but makes it a bit iffy

I think in this case we can put it up for suggestion (subejct to the rest of the committee's agreement, mind you). However, if it gets in but come December there's no firm and reliable release date, we'll have to put it to one side.

Oh, also I recommend season 1 of School Rumble. I have the dvds, so the society won't have to buy them. It's this incredibly crazy, over the top, extremely fun web of various romances occuring in a highschool. It ends up really addictive both because of how fun it is, but also because after you're about a third of the way through you actually (strangely) find yourself really involved with wanting certain characters to end up with each other &c.

It's very tentative for a Spring release, more likely Summer - see the 5th paragraph on this page.

There's a really sweet Anime I have to recommend, called Kamichu, it's 16 episodes and it's about a girl who finds out she is a god/spirit, and has powers. Would love for this to be shown!

This is my first time in the forum but I wanted to give my opinion and I'll try to enter more often to see what's decided ^^. Bye!

Welcome to the forum! We've seen a few ofthe above, but I can see what is allowable....You'll get a chance to vote on the anime you want to see at the screening (Friday 19th, unless I'm getting mixed up!) in a few weeks time.

Need to check out more of these suggestions....except Samurai Champloo, I know how awesome that is!

Slightly confused by Craig's posts above...

Any more film suggestions, guys? A film night of some sort is pretty much a given (it means not breaking up an anime around the summer quiz) so suggest away.

I don't know whether any of these have been suggested yet, but some anime feature films I'd like to see (and haven't yet seen);

Perfect Blue
Pom Poko
Lupin the 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro
FLCL
Macross Plus
Only Yesterday

I'll throw a few Ghibli into the mix;

  • Princess Mononoke - My favourite Ghibli film by far, absolutely beautiful animation with an interesting story line. (technically this was shown last year, but it wasn't a ScFi screening as such I might be able to slip it in? I own this.)
  • The Cat Returns - a fun film about Haru's sudden and unexpected trip into the Cat Kingdom. I own this.
  • Laputa: Castle in the Sky - Secret govenment agents, pirates, the army and a floating castle! I own this.
  • Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

Technically, it was only sci-fi people that actually turned up to Princess Mononoke. If there are enough people willing to see it again though, I suppose it comes under the 'exceptions' ruling.

We just need to be clear that if you vote for something, you're basically saying 'I'm likely to come along and watch this'.
