Eden of the East (Weeks 3-4, 21st - 28th October 2011)

What did everyone think?

SPOILERS FOR WEEK 1

I'm hesistant to give any thoughts on how good I think the series is until I've seen how the mystery is going to finish, but I will say I absolutely loved Episode 4 where we get to hear the explanation that the Seleçãos were given about their mission. The premise that episode put before me and the manner in which it unveiled it to me I found genuinely thrilling, and it brought to mind Death Note in particular in how it seems to pose this question to the audience of what they'd do in a similar situation (I still have no idea how I'd try and use the 10 billion yen to make Japan a better place, and would love to hear some ideas from you peoples).

I think I really liked the rest of the series, but will need to see more of it before I form anything more resembling a solid opinion. I do love how suspenseful it is, and in the earlier episodes I thought the humour served as an effective counterpoint to the mystery without in any way cheapening it (it kind of puts you in Saki's shoes) though I must admit that the humour in the most recent episode did seem a tad awkward in comparison (him riding the giant cat toy thing...sigh...) and I'm just generally not as entirely sold on the recent stuff we've seen relating to Saki which for me is starting to distract from rather than compliment the brilliant concept behind the show. Still, definitely looking forward to seeing where it goes :)

I think it's pretty much a given that in a thread about the screening posted after the screening there will be spoilers ;)

Overall, it was OK. Nothing particularly stood out, but yet it still kept me interested and entertained thought. However, things did seem to be improving with the last few episodes plot wise so hopefully we'll have an interesting conclusion next week!

Thought it was a bit odd that the police officer asked questions in English, got a response in Japanese and then asked more questions about the answer in English. Keep it all in one language!

The animation is quite standard, as is the music and OST. I felt that the opening's animation and music (from EP2) didn't match too well. That said, watching the Bluray did make for much prettier subs, including translating a lot of signs. They could have handled the sideways mobile phone a bit better! The ending is quite a clever use of stop animation.
Former SciFi IT Officer now taking great pleasure in telling the current committee that they're doing it all wrong and that they should get off my lawn.
You'll mainly find me at Anime, but also at some of the Classic and Contemporary screenings. I'm usually in the student centre before screenings too.

I really like it so far! It didn't seem interesting from the summary given, but I'm glad I went along. Not sure I can wait til next week to watch the rest of it though

Does anyone have any idea why they used Oasis for the first episode OP but not the others?

I have to say I really enjoyed this, can't wait for next Friday! :!:

The stop motion at the end is just unbelievable! The artistry that went into those bits of paper, wow! I bet it must have taken weeks to complete but what a wonderful credits roll! :o

Can someone explain something to me, the only bit so far I have yet to understand is a simple acronym! What is a NEET? :?:

Ahhhh the phone text, I wasn't the only one who titled their head in order to read it, right? :P

I am loving some of the humour, just makes me giggle!

I have to say, that I too would have no idea where to start and what to do if someone gave me a phone with an absurd amount of money loaded on to it!

It was a little reminiscent of Death Note, at least it wasn't like "Here's something that affords you great power, now let's kill off a load of people in a short space of time!"

Anyway, hurry up Friday!

NEET - Not in Education, Employment or Training. Originally a UK term, but now adopted in the far east. Basically people who just sit at home all day doing nothing productive whatsoever.

(See also hikikomori, essentially people who only go out for the essentials, e.g. work/school)

I had no idea it was a uk term I learnt it from "welcome to the NHK" its funny how some phases are picked up like that but lost in the country of origin.

nope... but when I saw Eden of the East it had Oasis for all of the openings... strange :/

I had the misfortune of only seeing random episodes (1-3 then 5...) So it was nice to actually get the full picture- looking forward to how it concludes, but will be a tad annoyed if they leave things hanging (like the random skeletal white apparition things >.< WTH?) I do like the animation however, they look too cute! and the number of up to date (even future) references :P

We don't know that there's necessarily any great secret to them. It could just be a look in to his mental state, or summat 'long those lines (I mean, it seems like some pretty nasty stuff went down in his past - whatever he chose to do with the NEETs for example (piles of shoes = veeeeeery creepy, considering...), so it would be understandable if that was causing him to go a tad bonkers on occasion). Intrigued to see if there is more to the apparitions than that though.

I honestly thought they'd cover up the nudity at the beginning Terminator 2 style, with well placed cars or boxes etc. Nope...behold the squiggle of censorship!

hahaha LOL :P yeah >.<

But yes, Haruhiist I cans see possibilities: I just mean if a) it's a segregated episode and nothing like it happens again and b) they don't allude or even explain it, it's a bit wierd, and would impact upon the star ratings I give it ^_^

Oh ok! Ta, I have never ever ever heard of that before today, funny how it is originally a UK term, it is a bit like the acronym Yuppie! That is no longer used at all and I believe that it was a UK term too....

Oh, *sigh* the censorship, that squiggle....
