Angel Beats! (Weeks 29-30 2011/12)

Who is excited for Angel Beats then? I originally watched this two years ago as it aired and fell in love it it and it still remains in my top 3. It's going to be good to rewatch it again :)

As a little taster, here is a little preview video, with subtitles. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nITUNf3gQh0

I won't be coming to this. I've seen it twice, and though I loved it first time round I found myself far less enamoured with it on a rewatch (though I still like it quite a bit and certainly prefer it to the other two anime series that were screened this semester).

My review of it is here. To very quickly summarise it I find the mood whiplash to be incredibly frustrating and the show often feels very contrived, though I still find it to be emotionally affecting and enjoy the ideas and feelings it explores.

I will not be at the screening. Possibly. Maybe. I have seen Angel Beats maybe 2.5 times? and would prefer fewer 'walking home gone 11, in the cold, all alone :'( ' I cans watch it at home :P

I do however think it an awesome anime, and challenge anyone not to laugh and/ or cry as the series goes on. In all honesty probably both. Simultaneously.

Someone asked at the meal about the Angel Beats music, so here you go;

There are 8 distinct albums of music from Angel Beats, mostly from Girls Dead Monster but there are some others. In order of release;

  • Crow Song - Iwasawa's songs, containing Crow Song, Alchemy and My Song.
  • Thousand Enemies - Yui's songs, containing Thousand Enemies, Rain Song and Highest Life. Only Thousand Enemies is in the anime and is Yui's first song (apart from singing the EP4 opening).
  • My Soul, Your Beats! / Brave Song - The Opening and Ending, containing full versions, TV versions and instrumental versions.
  • Angel Beats! Original Sound Track - 2 CDs containing all of the Angel Beats sound track and insert songs that were not done by Girls Dead Monster (such as 一番の宝物 [My Most Precious Treasure], which you will come across in the 2nd week). The artist for the sound track is known as ANANT-GARDE EYES.
  • Little Braver - Yui's second lot of songs, containing Little Braver, Shine Days and Answer Song. None of these are in the anime.
  • Keep the Beats - A companliation containing some old songs, some new songs and some of Iwasawa's songs sung by Yui. Contains Crow Song (Yui Ver.), Thousand Enemies, Shine Days, 23:50, Run with Wolves, Morning Dreamer, Rain Song, Alchemy (Yui Ver.), 一番の宝物 (Yui. Ver), Little Braver (Album Ver.), My Song (Yui. Ver), My Soul, Your Beats! (Gldemo Ver.), Brave Song (Gldemo Ver.)
  • 一番の宝物 ~Yui final ver.~ - More Yui songs released alongside the final bluray volume. Contains a new version of 一番の宝物, Storm Song and Day Game.
  • Last Song - More Iwasawa songs released alongside the final bluray volume. Contains Last Song, Hot Meal (Iwasawa's version of Thousand Enemies) and God Bless you (10 minutes long!)

A lot of the music has also been remixed, too numerous to list them all. One quite good album is LiLA'c RECORD's Heavenly Beats.

If you're wondering why Iwasawa and Yui's singing voices sound so good there's a reason for that - it's not actually their voice actors singing. Iwasawa is actually the singer marina and Yui is Lisa. Yui/Lisa have produced two live action promotional videos - Day Game and Little Braver. Iwasawa/marina and Yui/Lisa also did a live concert tour in Japan called Keep the Angel Beats. You can see a "digest movie" of it here.

And I think that just about covers all of the music! :)
