Semester 2 Suggestions Contemporary 2011-12

What did you think of our more recent blockbusters?

Semester 2 Suggestions Contemporary 2011-12

Postby TbsWoody » Sun Nov 06, 2011 6:30 pm

This is the place to any suggestions for stuff you want to see next semester on our Contemporary Wednesdays.

Suggestion rules (Please read):
1) Our definition for a Contemporary screening is anything from within the past 10 years. If you've got something older to suggest, you can post it in the Classic suggestions.
2) We have a 3 year rule. That is we aim not to show anything that has been shown in the previous 3 years. This is to ensure that in a standard length degree, you won't be watching the same thing multiple times.
3) We are the Sci-Fi and Fantasy society, so suggestions must be from the sci-fi and/or fantasy genres.
4) Suggestions don't just have to be for films, they can be for TV shows too. We can't often show a whole series in one night so perhaps suggest specific episodes.

Suggestions from other places:
Last Airbender: Animated series
The Descent

Personal Suggestions:
Troll Hunter

A list of our previous screenings can be found at here. Handy for checking against the 3 year rule!

You'll mainly find me at Anime, but also at some of the Classic and Contemporary screenings. I'm usually in the student centre before screenings too.

If it can be legally streamed online, that should also be fine. I'm not sure how it's distributed myself ;)

I'm afraid (because it's me) I'm gonna have to recommend a huge list of Superhero Films :D
(don't worry: I shan't expect /all/ of them to be played... this year  )

Batman Begins
Hellboy (1 or 2...or both? :P )
Iron Man (think that squeezed outside the 3 years mark...)
Hancock
Green Lantern
X-Men: First Class
Captain America

I wanted to suggest Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, I see that it is down on the list however which version is not listed (i.e. Disney or Tim Burton)

I liked it

in that case I have a few more suggestions (I watch too many contemporary films I think.. sorry: but not all of them this time are superhero films!)

Green Hornet
The Incredible Hulk (the more recent Edward Norton one)
(neither of which I have seen, but would like to)

and:

Sherlock Holmes (pretty sure the RDJr one hasn't been shown?)
The A-Team (not entirely sure it counts as Sci-Fi/ Fantasy, but they do some rather impossible things?)

I don't think the Green Lantern violates any of our rules, and i'm sure Luiza was just stating her personal preference ;)

That said, I think FilmSoc are planning to show this soon after release this semester. We'll still put it to the vote, but we don't want to duplicate where possible.

I watched the first few minutes and then just had to turn it off. :S

Captain America, on the otherhand, I'd like to see.

X-Men First Class is ok.

Don't think either count. Come on, there are plenty of sci fi and fantasy films to pick from :)

I don't want to spoil Sherlock Holmes...

but I guess it depends on whether you consider pseudo-science as science-fiction or not?
Thats why I though A-Team might count
because let's face it... you can't really fly a tank in real life.... pseudo-science ^_^

I would recommend tons more... but they've all been shown too recently :(

the only thing I've got left to recommend are the TV Series Merlin and Primeval
*don't judge*

Merlin and Primeval are awesome. Still need to catch up on the latest series of Primeval - it was broadcast on Watch, which I couldn't get at the time.

And Merlin actually came up at the scifi quiz last(?) year. For pictionary. The (epic!) picture was essentially a drawing of the climax of the season 2(?) plotline, thus annoying someone who hadn't yet watched it! :D

I can attest to Ink being an brilliant film. Highly recommended. I did think about showing it at FimSoc last year, but never really got around to putting it forward.
