just coz you don't have a real name.. I have vague notions of you being another of the Jo(h)n franchise but don't really remember. For the newbies we had Jon-Kun, other Jon, Hobbit and a few others. There can be only (1) Jon!

I'm so glad Jimmy is a Jimmy, and not a James or I would just be confused all the time.

We have two James' on committee and the other two of us have brothers called James. There comes a time when we should start forgiving the people who call their kids silly things like Apple and Princess because at least they'll be unique when they start school. I had serious identity crises through school and my gap year because I was never the only Rachel. (In Germany, I was Rachel 1. Or big Rachel. Or "one of the Rachels." It got old.)

It's odd that the people with the most unusual real names tend not to be referred to by them - despite being (as far as I can recall) the only Jonathon in my year, I accumulated a plethora of nicknames. My friend James was known by his surname, despite being one of two James', whilst Mark, who shared that name with another 8 people, was always 'Mark'.

And whilst some unusual names might be ok, Apple etc., I think a line needs to be drawn before "Telula does the hula from Hawaii". A long way away.

That was bad... we just need a larger base of names to choose from that seem normal. Being back Edith and Mabel anyone?

But where would the fun be in telling you? I'm quite happy to go by Lina, anyway someone has already used it on the forums, I'm just not telling you where :P

EDIT: just realised it was Jimmy who asked... he knows my name unless he has serious memory problems, but I'm still not telling him

Jesus, I didn't even realize we were on the next page!

Look at the last post on page 1. That was what I was replying to. I have no idea what happened in that interval of time. Possibly time travel.

Yeah, wondering what the one syllable name was. But no he meant ~ as being abbrreviated, but then again saying it comes out as 2 syllables, naughty naughty, you don't win with that.

My current one stemmed form me needing a new username (I was sick of my old one) and from me being obsessed with Stargate: Atlantis at the time.

And X's are cool, so it got put there. Means I have almost no conflicts with other users when registering, so that's good.

holyone2, ahh indeed a truly terrible nickname, but one I've stuck with for some reason or another for around 9 years!

I got it when I played my first online game (an MMO , legend of mir), I wanted to play a priest, but god damn 'Priest' was taken, so i took 'Holy Man' but that was taken, even Holy one was taken. So, forlorn and upset at the disturbing amount of people who choose such awful nicknames on MMO's, I decided to join them, with 'holyone'...but MOTHER OF MERCY that was taken. I slammed my hands onto keyboard in frustration, screw any coherant name, lets go with 'holyone two' ...TAKEN, so holyone2 came into being.

A truly epic story :P

How did you manage to turn "tilde" into two syllables? :?

Don't you pronounce it 'till-da'? And of course some of our maths lecturers (I remember when Roger Moser said it, it got a giggle) prefer to call ~ 'twiddle'.

I tend to pronounce it as one syllable but I don't think pronouncing tild-a is actually wrong.

I've learned a fair amount from Germans about how your language affects the way you pronounce things written down, like the fact that whenever anyone sees my name, which is Rachel, pronounced Ray-chel, they always pronounce it Rah-hel, because they pronounce ch differently normally.

Interesting times.

Also don't letter patterns break down into syllables? Like when you're speaking phonetically or explaining to a kid or something, e.g. it might even be three syllables: ti-ill-da. I don't know, :P

Mine is the name of a wizard in the 1975 fantasy book The Half-Angels by Andrew Lovesey. A fantastic book, strangely it is virtually unheard of even on the internets, and as far as I can determine, his sole novel.
