Showing vital skills to the community
Over the last year the club has organised and run several community based events with a range of aims from education to fundraising. Here you can find the lowdown on our past events, our current plans for new events and information on how to get involved.
The club has an ambition to carry out even more events this year including getting involved with local schools, save a baby courses and fundraising events. If you are interested or have any great ideas that you want to see turned into reality then sign up or contact us at lifesaving@bath.ac.uk with ‘Community:…’ in the subject title.
Introduction to Lifesaving Sport University of Bath 2009
As the most active competitive club in the local area we have been to nearly 35 competitions over the last few years. In an effort to get local school children involved in the sport, promote essential lifesaving skills and general fitness the club ran an ‘Introduction to sport day’ at the University of Bath. Club members as well as members from Keynsham and Brandford on Avon got involved and produced an exciting and fun opportunity for both the teachers and children which is sure to be repeated this year due to popular demand from the participants!
Save A Baby's Life Course Walcott Children's Centre, Bath 2009
Knowing how to save a child in trouble could be considered one of the most important skills anyone can learn; this is especially true of new mothers. With several courses under our belt the club was invited to teach these skills to groups of new parents at the Walcott children’s centre in Bath. Over 30 parents took part in a whole day of events and were provided with training, Q and A sessions and information leaflets. A great time was had by all and due to fantastic feedback and continued demand we are already planning our return visit.
Save A Baby's Life Course Bath University 2008
With our experience of the Save a baby’s life roadshow our members decided we should do something special ourselves. With this in mind the club organised and promoted a course for local parents to attend and learn the essential skills on offer. With involvement from both Keynsham and Bradford on Avon clubs a whole day of events and training was organised. Though limited by space the course was well attended with an obvious local demand for the skills on offer. This event was so successful that it even managed to feature in our own article in the RLSS ‘Lifesavers’ magazine (The club also offers opportunities for the budding photographers/journalists amongst you as you can see to the right! - Click on the image to see a more readable version)
Tesco Save A Babys Life Roadshow Trowbridge 2008
A large contingent of Club members took the trip over to Trowbridge to support the Save a Baby's Life Course organised as part of TESCO's Save a Baby's Life Roadshow. The event was supported by a number of other local Lifesaving Clubs and over 90 people attended the 2 hour course. Parents, grand‐parents and parents‐to‐be attended the popular session which showed them how to deal with a range of life threatening problems that could befall their child or baby.
