The Shure SM58 is the type of
microphone you'll see every week on Top of the Pops. Designed
for vocalists, it is very similar to a SM 57
with a metal dome to protect the front from hitting the mouths of
enthusiastic singers, and therby emitting a thuding sound.
Though this type of microphone is no longer primarily used by Backstage (we normally use e845s or e865s), anyone wishing to do sound should really become familiar with this classic microphone.
With a good mid-range response, and good microphone technique, there's not
much that can go wrong.
