Introduction

The Soundcraft K1, our front-of house sound desk, is used in almost every show, ball and band. Only the largest events hire in a different desk. Able to handle 24 mono and 2 stereo inputs, it is large enough to cope with the vast majority of Backstage events and so any member wanting to sound engineer will get to know this desk extremely well.

Each channel can send 48V of phantom power to any microphone requiring it. The K1's EQ is split into four bands (high, high-mid, low-mid and low fequencies) which can be used to produced the desired sound. Also useful is a socket into each channel for an insert, which allows a signal processor to be used on the channel.

Although old, and therefore in need of careful attention, this remains a high quality mid-range desk.

Things you need to look out for

Don't try and fiddle with the power supply module when the desk is powered up since the on/off switch on the side of the unit has a habit of turning off even if a small pressure is applied to it.

When the channel is switched on, don't forget that you also need to press the mix button to send the signal to the master faders. Its really annoying when you spend ten minutes trying to find out why you're not making any noise when you've missed the mix button.
