MPhil/PhD research: Bioenergy - Resource Use and Environmental ImpactsResearch interests:
This studentship is supported by the Great Western Research (GWR) Alliance in partnership with the Environment Agency. Land use potential and the biomass productivity of the South West of England are being estimated on a materials flow basis. A 'full fuel cycle' environmental impact study is being undertaken using life-cycle assessment (LCA). It includes looking at all the life-cycle stages - the cultivation and harvesting the crop, storage, transportation of the crop for processing, drying, impacts of converting the crop into useable energy, the disposal or re-use of the resultant ash (which contains pollutants such as dioxins and heavy metals). Related economic issues, such as changes in significant price signals (e.g.,the price of oil, grain, vegetable oils and plant for various production processes), are also being examined. Although the scope of this project is predominantly limited to the environmental impacts in the South West (in the context of England and Wales), there is also consideration of the impacts of demand from England and Wales on the environments of other nations and of the impact of foreign bioenergy policies and international markets on production in this country. The project is supervised by Prof Geoff Hammond and Dr Marcelle McManus at the University of Bath, and Dr Alan Feest at the University of Bristol.Academic Publications:
