Research Interests

These range from socio-linguistics and new language teaching methodologies to poetry and philosophical-literary studies. Currently doing research in Franco-Russian literature and philosophy under the joint supervision of Professor Marsh and Dr Wagstaff , and won an Entente Cordiale Scholarship to continue this research in the Sorbonne (Paris IV) in 2002. My main areas of expertise encompass both classical and contemporary Russian culture with the main emphasis on literature, as well as gender studies and the problematics of border crossings, self-identification, especially the case of Jewish-Russian identities.

Languages

Teaching

This includes both web-based teaching and developing appropriate e-learning materials, as well as more conventional teaching in a classroom setting. The former category involves development of a corpus of Russian language educational materials and providing web-based solutions to accommodate these materials. It also involves conducting electronic lessons with students and administering their web-based self-learning. The latter category includes my teaching Russian language classes: audio and multimedia laboratory sessions (using computer assisted language learning) for the first year undergraduates (both ab initio and advanced) and grammar surgery classes for final year undergraduates. I also teach Russian Cultural Studies to undergraduates and am also involved in the second year undergraduate option Border Crossings: European identities in modern literature and film on border crossings in modern Europe (geographical and spiritual alike).

I am very serious and enthusiastic about my teaching duties. I enjoy developing new modules and innovative ideas, especially of a cross-disciplinary nature. My teaching experience and linguistic expertise involves working with the virtual learning environment, designing new e-learning materials, programming in html, and using multimedia means and computer assisted tools as well as reviewing some language teaching software. This together with my experience as a webmaster make me effective in the area of WebCT and distance learning. At present I am involved in the project of designing an e-learning site for Russian-English studies (at the ESML Department of the University of Bath in my capacity as a Language Teaching Development Officer) and hope to extend it to other languages taught in the Department at various levels.

Since 1995 I have also been teaching both Russian language and literature at various local educational institutions in the Bath area at different levels (this includes beginner's level, A-level, continuing education, Russian for business-people and undergraduate level). From 1994 until 2002 I worked as a part-time tutor in mathematics at the University of Bath (Department of Mathematical Sciences) and as a Visiting Lecturer at the University of the West of England (UWE) where I gave a course in Computer Science in the academic years 1998 and 1999.

Translation Work

Translator of the mathematics journal Izvestia of the Russian Academy of Sciences from Russian into English for the London Mathematical Society. Also translator of the mathematics journals Mat. Sbornik and Russian Mathematical Surveys for the London Mathematical Society. These are the journals of the Russian Academy of Sciences translated into English and republished by the London Mathematical Society. In the past eight years I have translated over 40 such articles in various branches of mathematics. I have also translated obituaries and articles celebrating the birthdays of leading mathematicians of the former Soviet Union. I normally type my translations myself using AMSTeX.
