When I first came to Bath my
father explained to me that the difference
between a lecturer and a professor is that the latter can do larger
sums; hence the expression Professor of Hard Sums. Mind you,
with some of these pure mathematicians I suspect they can add more
than twice as many digits as I can.
Of course since the expulsion from Mathematical Sciences these
comments are hardly relevant. I suppose I am meant to be able to
write longer programs that a lecturer.....
