It is said that Lazarus was raised from the dead, while others insist
that he was only sleeping. Being raised from the dead may sound like
a good idea, but is it what you would really want? One is reminded of
the story about the people in a population who cannot die, but they
age -- this must be Gulliver's Travels, but ones mind gets so
cluttered with information. One could contrast this story with the
Makropoulos case, which ultimately is also a disater (except as an
opera).
Actually I saw Josephine Barstow in this opera not so long ago. My
wife was at the same school as Ms Barstow. I suppose that is how she
was raised.
