In my work with nonassociative algebras I have faced the following situation: G is a finite simple group which has a maximal subgroup of order 2p (p odd prime). Is it true that then G is either PSL(2,q) or Suzuki(q) (for suitable values of q, of course)? I would appreciate comments and references. Thanks, Markku Niemenmaa.
