GROUPS - ST ANDREWS 2001 in OXFORD
5 August - 18 August 2001
A conference, sponsored by the London Mathematical Society and the
Edinburgh Mathematical Society, is being organised jointly by the
University of Oxford and the University of St Andrews and will be held at
the University of Oxford from Sunday 5 August 2001 (arrival day) to
Saturday 18 August 2001 (departure day).
During the first week of the conference ( 5 August - 11 August 2001) the
following speakers will each give a course of four lectures:

Michael Vaughan-Lee Oxford
During the second week of the conference ( 12 August - 18 August 2001)
there will be a programme of invited lectures. In particular Tuesday 14
August will be a day of special lectures in celebration of Daniel
Gorenstein coordinated by Richard Lyons (Rutgers) and Thursday 16 August
will be a "Groups and Sets" day coordinated by Simon Thomas (Rutgers).
Throughout the conference there will be sessions for seminars by other
conference participants.
All lectures and seminars will take place in the Mathematical Institute,
Oxford.
The Proceedings of the Conference will be published by Cambridge University
Press in the London Mathematical Society Lecture Note Series. As well as
articles by the main speakers the two volumes of the Proceedings will
contain survey articles and some research papers submitted by other
conference participants. These survey and research papers, which will be
refereed in the usual way, should be submitted to the address below not
later than 1 July 2001.

The fees are as follows:
Registration fee : GBP 30 (reduced to GBP 20 if paid before 15 March 2001)
Membership fee : GBP 160 (reduced to GBP 130 if paid before 31 May 2001)
Accommodation Rates per week:
A. Lady Margaret Hall (Dinner, B&B): GBP 477 (en suite)

(reduced to GBP 408 before 31 May 2001)
C. Lady Margaret Hall (Dinner, B&B): GBP 400 (standard)

D. St Anne's College (B&B): GBP 256
(reduced to GBP 231 before 31 May 2001)
There is a gala dinner in each week of the conference and the cost is
included in all the above rates.
A limited amount of special subsidised accommodation is available at GBP 18
per night B&B for research students and other special cases. For further
details please contact the organisers.
Note that Lady Margaret Hall provides the bar and is the main social focus
for the conference.
Please note: the University of Oxford has a No Smoking policy; car parking
in Oxford is difficult with Lady Margaret Hall and St Anne's College having
disabled parking only. Disabled parking is also available at the
Mathematical Institute.
The registration fee is payable by all adults at the time of application
for membership and is non-returnable in case of subsequent cancellation.
The membership fee (which is also payable by non-residents) is payable at
the same time as the accommodation. It covers tea, coffee and certain
social events. It also includes the two volumes of the Conference
Proceedings to be published by Cambridge University Press. A reduced
membership fee of GBP 130 (discounted to GBP 100 before 31 May) (social events
only) is payable by accompanying adults.
The Bed and Breakfast accommodation rate includes full English breakfast.
No further gratuities or taxes are payable on any of the above charges.
Payment of the membership fee and accommodation charge may be made by
credit card (Access, Mastercard, Visa only).
The conference organisers would appreciate early registration.
Further information including details of travel to Oxford will be sent to
members prior to the conference.
There will be an attractive social programme to give all participants and
accompanying persons the "Oxford experience". This will include a
reception, two conference dinners, two half day excursions and a music
evening (musicians please bring instruments) all included in the above
fees. Opportunities for punting, croquet, theatre visits etc. will be
available.
