| Description This winged green beast, spewing foliage, is a still-functioning gargoyle (water-spout) on the exterior of Trowbridge's Church of St James. It can be seen at the top of the drainpipe to the right of the church's north porch. With its raised wings and crouching posture, this is clearly a beast and not a human figure. Yet from the mouth area we can see the familiar foliage spewing forth. Perhaps in the late mediaeval period the green man form began to change as the meaning of the motif was gradually forgotten.
