Report a Green Man

Type: Foliage-spewer, foliate moustache
Location: Church of All Saints
OS GR: ST 947786
Period: Victorian
Medium: Stone
Foliage: Hawthorn
Mood: Gentlemanly, quiet
Description

This Victorian gentleman with a hawthorn moustache is on the south-east corner of the chancel exterior.  He seems a much later production altogether than green men III and IV at Sutton Benger - the carving is crisper and he sits on the much-restored chapel.  We believe him to be a Victorian addition, a tribute to the Hawthorn King inside the church.

Also at Sutton Benger

  • Five more green men
  • An immense pig gargoyle
