Report a Green Man

Type: Foliage-spewer
Location: Church of Holy Cross
OS GR: ST 854860
Period: Perpendicular mediaeval
Medium: Stone carving
Foliage: Strongly stylised, acanthus?
Mood: Staring, bleak

One of the bosses in the South porch is this spewer of very stylised foliage.  His eyes are prominent, staring down at the foliage pouring from his mouth.  And do I imagine it, or has he got a very fine moustache?

Also at Sherston

  • the famous carving of Rattlebone on the church exterior
  • the Rattlebone Inn with its evocative inn sign, opposite the church
