Report a Green Man

Type: Foliage-spewer
Location: Church of St Peter
OS GR: ST 928758
Period: Perpendicular
Medium: Stone carving
Foliage: Stylised
Mood: Hollow-eyed, stressed

Just inside the south porch, overhead as we enter, we find this hollow-eyed green man.  He forms one of the bosses of the tierceron-star vault.  His foliage seems to be overwhelming him, filling his mouth to overflowing, and the general impression is one of stress as he struggles to see out from the encroaching stems and leaves.

Also at Langley Burrell

  • Two more green men
  • Much more interesting carving and sculpture in this gem of a church
  • The setting - away from the village, surrounded by trees, with the manor house nearby.  Winter aconites and snowdrops everwhere when we visited in January.
