| Description This green man is in the north transept, decorating the large central ceiling boss near the north window. The jawless demonic head is spewing foliage high overhead, both difficult to study and equally difficult to photograph effectively. We can see that he has animal's ears, and perhaps has his eyes closed. Nikolaus Pevsner in The Buildings of England: Wiltshire (p.115) tells us that the bulk of Bishopstone church is Decorative, so we can tentatively date this green man to the thirteenth century. |
