Report a Green Man

Type: Foliage-spewer
Location: Church of St Mary and St Melor
OS GR: SU 142414
Period: Mediaeval
Medium: Wood carving
Foliage: Acanthus leaf
Mood: Grotesque, disturbing

This grotesque green man forms one of the supporters of the mediaeval roof in Amesbury church. Look for him on the North side of the nave roof at the west end -- he is the second from the West. He is spewing acanthus leaves, and is obviously finding it an unpleasant experience, with his mouth grossly distended and his eyes popping.

Also at Amesbury

  • An anthropophagus (man-eater) among the bosses of the South transept
  • Just a mile or so away -- Stonehenge!
