How sound propagates: the wave equation

From a physical or mathematical point of view, acoustics can be viewed as the study of solutions of the wave equation for a fluid. The linear wave equation, which we will derive presently, is the equation governing the propagation of small (linear) disturbances in a compressible fluid. The wave equation can be applied to many different systems with different governing equations: here we apply it to fluids governed by the Navier-Stokes equations.
