Job Title:

MPhil/PhD Research: Industrial Energy Use and Improvement Potential

Research interests:

My PhD research is sponsored by Great Western Research (GWR) and EDF Energy R&D, being supervised by Prof Geoff Hammond at the University of Bath and Prof Catherine Mitchell at the University of Exeter. The project examines energy use within the manufacturing sector of the UK and the potential to reduce this energy use, primarily through efficiency measures. At the core of this work are thermodynamic techniques, although an understanding of economic, social and other factors are also important.

Energy use within manufacturing is highly diverse. Consequently top down analysis, which examines the whole of the sector, can provide useful context but more focused approaches are required to draw firm conclusions. My work has two focuses, firstly, the reuse of surplus heat from industry – a widely applicable technology that holds considerable potential for reducing energy use. Secondly, the non-intensive sector of manufacturing that is often ignored but has the capability to improve its energy use significantly.

In addition to my PhD research I am also involved in a UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) project with researchers from the University of Bath, the University of Oxford and University College London. The project aims to improve the representation of the industrial sector in UK energy models by conducting detailed analyses of the most important energy using subsectors and systems.
