PhD Students & Post Docs

Dr. Huaning Hu

Huaining’s PhD was in chemical engineering and her research focused on the development of microbial fuel cells for power generation and hydrogen production using municipal wastewater in University of Nottingham. She is now designing, building and investigating photo-microbial fuel cells, where the microbe in the anode photosynthesizes under illumination to produce current in the external circuit

 Eleanor Johnson (3nd Year)

DTA studentship

Investigating biomimetic materials, in particular peptide hydrogels as enzyme supports. Low molecular weight peptides are being induced to gel in thin films at surfaces. The gel formation is monitored in real time using SPR and dehydrated films are characterised by SEM.

Rebecca Thorne (3nd Year)

EPSRC studentship

Bio Photovolatics in Collaboration with the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Cambridge: Porous ceramics coated with conducting oxides are being developed in collaboration with Dr. Andrew Dent in Bath. The aim of the project is to build photo-biological solar cells where light drives photosynthesis in algae or cyanobacteria and a fraction of the photoexcited electrons are collected using redox mediators and an electrode.

Thomas Risbridger (2nd Year)

NPL CASE studentship

Tom is studying the effects of water on Dye Sensitized Solar Cells, in particular whether the water partitions into the pores of the nanocystalline oxide.

Kathryn Wills (2nd Year)

DTC studentship, integrated 4 year PhD

Kathryn is synthesisieng novel ligands for Dye Sensitized Solar Cells, in particular ligands for attaching to non-standard oxide surfaces.

Shane MacDonald

EPSRC studentship

Shane is using optical waveguide spectroscopy to investigate the adsorption of small molecules into nanoporous materials

Kenneth Schneider

EPSRC studentship

Kenneth is screening photosynthetic organisms to investigate electron transfer between whole cells and external electrodes.
