Adsorption and Chromatography in Bioseparations

Adsorption and Chromatography in Bioseparations

Dr John Hubble

Reader in Biochemical Engineering

Introductory material

This material was developed to form part of our final year undergraduate bioseparations module. It is written to provide an introduction to the types of chromatography employed in bioseparations. The background to a number of models for performance evaluation is included.

Adsorption models

As a result of our research interests in Affinity Adsorption I have written a number of programs based on different models of adsorption performance. These are based on different packages/programing environments and may be found following the links below.

ADCOL is the exception in that it is a relatively complete package that allows modelling of the Load/Wash/Elute stages of an adsorption cycle. ADCOL is a Visual BASIC package and can be downloaded as a ZIP file ADCOL. ADCOL is based on a simple model that treats an adsorption column as a series of well mixed tanks. The core routine is listed under the PowerBASIC link (lumped.bas).

Programs that require a high level programming language have been written in PowerBASIC. These can be found here

BASIC

Spreadsheet models are written in Microsoft EXCEL and can be found here

EXCEL

Other models that allow fitting of experimental data to models are written for Scientist or Berkeley Madonna
