Dr. Paul McCombie
I lecture in geology, soil mechanics, geotechnical engineering and surveying for the Civil Engineering courses in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering. I worked for several years for a civil engineering consultancy and then for a soil reinforcement manufacturer before joining the University of Bath in 1990. I served seven years as Director of Studies for Civil Engineering, and did a lot of the work designing our current set of courses, and getting them running.
I've been a chartered member of the Institution of Civil Engineers since 1986.
My research interests are in the field of geotechnical engineering, in particular:
- slope stability analysis
- dry stone retaining walls
- the behaviour and design of reinforced soil
- the effects of vegetation on soil beneath foundations
A group of us have constructed and tested to destruction a series of full-scale dry stone retaining walls on a site on campus, with EPSRC funding.
